| This site provides counts of patent documents for a range of nations and time periods, aggregated by industry of manufacture (IOM) and sector of use (SOU). While the raw data are publicly available, and have been provided by international and national patent offices, those data have been transformed here for use by economists and policymakers.
In particular, we have developed the OECD Technology Concordance and Wellesley Technology Concordance in order to translate patent class definitions into industrial class definitions. Since those concordances are probabilistic in nature, patent counts provided here are non-integers, reflecting the fact that one patent could be split between industrial origins or IOMs as well as multiple uses or SOUs.
Data are presented using the ISIC definition set, and a link to those definitions is provided on the data codebook page.
Data will be updated regularly, dependent upon requests and funding. Please email us if you have specific requests for data series and/or if you can offer funding to expand our available set.
